HTC Hero update to 2.1 “Eclair” in northern Sweden

29 Jun

Yes! About damn time the update to 2.1 Eclair was pushed out for the HTC Hero as well. Took them only half a year to get it fixed and released. Just saw yesterday that they had released the source for 2.2 Froyo, but hoping to get that upgrade (seeing as HTC has kind of said they won’t do the upgrade for the Hero) as well is probably pointless.

Here’s what HTC says on their (swedish) support pages:

Downtime

22 Jun

I finally decided to switch Linux distro on the server… and 1 hour 43 minutes later we’re up and running again. Not too shabby all things considered.

Silly me who did not backup every useful file before reinstalling. Good thing it isn’t too long ago I configured the server, so I still had everything somewhat fresh in memory. :)

Now some sleep…

edit: Apparently I also forgot curl and mod rewrite…

Sci-Fi from Terry Pratchett

16 Jun

I couldn’t help but to scream “Yay!” within my own head, when I read an article on the Guardian about Terry Pratchett. He’s one of my all-time favorite authors and now he is teaming up with Stephen Baxter to write a sci-fi novel. I’m a huge fan of science fiction (besides fantasy, obviously), so this is Good News with a capital G and N. The sci-fi novel will be about how man can step to the world next door (parallel universes) and it’s coming out in the spring of 2012.

Another interesting tidbit is that the next Discworld novel is coming out this autumn. (Hooray!)

Note to self – Postfix

16 Jun

Remember for future references that configuring postfix to work with google apps is about as pleasant as splinters under the fingernails. However, credit where it’s due… found a nice post on the matter from the prancing tarantula.

Soft 404′s and Caffeine (+ some other findings)

09 Jun

I just finished reading up on the news I’ve missed, even found a few interesting tidbits I thought I’d post about.

Google webmaster tools now can show “soft 404” crawl errors – that’s a page not found, but without the correct response code.

Also a second Google-thingy, their new search index called “caffeine” which should be serving fresher content instead of the layered kind we are used to. First thing which comes to my mind is: how will this affect SEO?

I also saw a nice post on SEOmoz about Google vs Bing and a correlation analysis of the ranking elements. An interesting read, if you don’t have too much work to do.

EDIT: El Reg

Hello world!

04 Jun

Right, so the blog is up and running (more or less). Had a bit of a dilemma with the setup which was quickly resolved with a clean reinstallation (so much for the useful advice of plugin developers on WP security and hardening).

Now the question which arises is what to fill it [the blog] with?
Content, yes… that’s a bit obvious, but what kind?
Should I just do my usual number of rambling monotonically through the events of an uneventful day? I think not… I am actually intrigued a bit by the thought of writing something more fulfilling for once.

It’s a very nice thought atleast, we’ll see how it goes. *insert appropriate smiley-face here*
