It’s Christmas and the last thing I wanted was to be running back and forth between the laptop and the wireless router, but alas, not everything appears to go my way in life. The D-Link DI-524 wireless router seemed to drop the wireless connections on a completely random basis.

I did a couple of quick searches and discovered a newer firmware version on D-Link’s awful site.

- “Nice, for once everything seems to be going well”, I thought to myself.

I clicked on download and was redirected to ftp.dlink.se, which of course was down, and if D-Links forums are to be believed has been so for quite some time. The US and Russian FTP servers didn’t seem to have the right firmware.

- “#¤%&!”

Quite a bit of googling later I found a somewhat suspicious site, which luckily had the swedish ftp folders mirrored, I clicked on download and voila! The same site also had the manual which I grabbed just in case (I hate having to guess what the default password on a router is after a reset).

So, the files I used are below, just in case someone else runs into the same problem and needs to find the firmware.

Here’s the description from the D-Link support site:
“DI-524 Firmware 3.13b02 for hardware version Gx only
This firmware is to be considered BETA software
Solves various stability issues on WAN and WLAN”

The upgrade was just as easy as pie:

1. Unless you have changed your routers IP, go to http://192.168.0.1/
2. Login with “admin” and your password (default is blank)
3. Click on “Tools” in the upper menu
4. Click on “Firmware” in the left menu
5. Click the choose file-button and select the unpacked .bin-file (you obviously unpacked the zip, didn’t you?)
6. Click Apply and twiddle your thumbs for 15-20 seconds
7. Go back to http://192.168.0.1/ and login again (cross your fingers just in case)
